Understand your hair
Three things decide how a product behaves in your hair, and they're independent of each other.
- Pattern
- The shape your hair takes when it dries on its own — straight, wavy, curly or coily. Pattern tells you which direction to work with.
- Strand thickness
- How thick a single strand feels between your fingers: fine, medium or thick. This is not about how much hair you have. Fine strands need noticeably less product.
- Length
- Short hair needs product placed at the top; longer hair needs it distributed in sections so it doesn't clump.
Choosing a finish is the other half. Matte reads casual and textured; shine reads sharp and formal. Whichever you pick, start with less than you think you need — you can always add, you can't easily take away.
